                    The Last Joy
Step Father was very amazed and  couldn't believe what he witnessed during the service. He thought about it so well, and couldn't understand, why a man could just decide to make men like him suffer? why a man could decide to make those who work for him go starving? One million is more than enough to do the settling. Step father told his colleagues about their employer's action the following day, and they all agreed to boycott work as well as confront Honorable, making step father the spokesman.
" Honorable sir, we are very much aware that, this company belongs to you and that, you decide how it runs. But how can it be run smoothly, if the people working for you are not happy? How can we discharge our duty properly, if we are hungry and weak. For the past twelve months Sir, you have not given us a dine on our shelter stipends and you have not been paying us our salaries regularly. Sir, this is telling on us sir, we all have wives and children that are depending on us. We are simply begging you to make life easy for us, so we can discharge our duties properly. Please, pay us the money you owe us".
That was all what step father said. The following day, he, alongside some of his colleagues who spoke during the boycott were paid all the dues including the shelter stipends, everything, but the envelope came alongside their dismissal letter. They weren't allowed to see Honorable, so they never know the main reason why they were sacked.
My siblings and I had arrived from school, the day step father came back home looking dejected. It was on a Tuesday afternoon. He met me helping my siblings with their assignments. And then he called, Aliyah, Paul and Prisca, I am back. We were surprised to see him back, so early.  He didn't say a word, but handed to me the snacks he got for us,entered his room and then shut the door.
It was not until two days after, i knew what was going on.

"The second position in Biology, Akinlabi Aliyah Serah, the second position in Chemistry, Akinlabi Aliyah Serah, the second position in Languages, Akinlabi Aliyah!!....
There was so much joy in my heart as i made my way to the high table to get my prizes. I walked majestically with the rhythm of applause, though they were all in honour of second positions, I was contented. However, that July end of session celebration was the last record of happiness and joy that I had.
Yes, I am Aliyah Serah Akinlabi. As far as I know, I was one of the top student in my class. Let me say, I used to be second in position. I want to be a psychiatric doctor. So that is why I study hard. Being a doctor is fine, but everyone asks me, why psychiatry? Really, i don't know. It was easy to score higher than everyone in the class except the mystery boy, Kunle. He maintained the position of being the brightest student in the class, sometimes, I feel he is a textbook. He even knows more than the teacher. Unlike me, he has no future ambition because he doesn't know what he wants to become. He seldomly talks, all he knows and does was to read. So, I am not in any way jealous of his perfect scores. The last thing I heard about him after leaving high school was that, he got a scholarship to study abroad, what he did after, what course did he study? I had no idea.
The First abortion i had was so painful, the feeling was horrible. I bled for months, that I had to skip some weeks in school, so as to avoid suspicions of any kind. It all started during summer break, August - september holiday. My supposed father, kept it all from my mother. What will he even say? Or me, how do i tell Mother, that i have taken up her role, since she wasn't always there? How do I explain to her, that I am burning, on the inside?
