Hacked Chapter 2 -------- Too late
CHAPTER TWO
Too Late
My poor uncles, Hammed and late Mohammed suffered greatly, all because of ignorance. Unknowing to my grandmother, the twin were having sickle cell disease, a group of blood disorder caused by an inherited haemoglobin, and so, they fall ill often as a result of its crisis.
Thanks to Doctor Charles who discovered and confirmed the nature of their illness. However, the discovery was a bit late. We lost Mohammed.
Dr Charles who hailed from the eastern region of Nigeria was the only youth corp member posted to Ilarin Community Clinic and Maternity Centre, a community very close to Badejoko town. The clinic was filled with community health workers and midwives volunteers who barely come to work.
Grandmother relocated to Ilarin, after she left her husband's house. She got a job at the clinic as a cleaner in the Clinic and Maternity centre. During this time, the twin were barely five Years old. They haven't started schooling and so they often follow Grandma to the clinic.
The very day Mohammed died, Grandma, took them along to the clinic and as usual left them to play as she goes about doing her job. Doctor Charles heard a child crying from afar. And since the cry persisted for a long time, he decided to come out and take a look at whatever was happening. He saw Mohammed, lying on the floor, crying and wallowing in pain. He quickly moved close to check what was happening, he discovered the poor boy had a very high fever and and could not lift his body. Grandma came in time, she met Doctor Charles who had already lifted the child's body and is ready to take him inside the ward for treatment. Though Mohammed was treated, however, the pain was too much that he didn't respond to treatment. It was after his death, that Grandmother got to know that she had been a victim of ignorance. And so she vowed to give her surviving children good education, like that of Doctor Charles.
Grandma was left with her two children. Mum and uncle Hammed. She was doing her best to making sure she provides their needs, especially for their education. However, being the only one catering for the children, she wasn't able to provide everything, because her earnings couldn't cover all their expenses. So she took up extra jobs in order to make ends meet.
Mum gave birth to me when she was fifteen going to sixteen. Let me say, I took after her beauty. I guess that was the reason why Ifeanyi, Mr Chukwu's errand boy couldn't resist the devil, the day he raped her.
How did this happen ? Only Mum could explain that, for she hardly says anything about how she conceived me. But according to what Grandmother told me, she said
"I was away, to work as usual, on that faithful saturday, leaving Sameera and Hammed behind at home. Of course, Sameera had grown, I can't be taking a fifteen years old teenager everywhere with me. There were three shops in front of our house, back then. One was empty and the other two were occupied by Mr and Mrs Chuckwu. The wife was selling foodstuffs especially the Igbo vegetables while the husband ventured into electrical appliances.
Ifeanyi was their errand boy, he often
stays in the two shops when the couples are not around.
Often times, Sameera and Hammed play outside, most especially around the shops.
I met Sameera crying when I came back from work that day, and I asked her what the matter was? She couldn't bring herself to tell me until a week after the incidence.
I had actually noticed she was always moody, especially, whenever she comes back from school.
When she finally told me, Ifeanyi raped her".
This time, grandmother's voice cracked. Then she continued.
" It was too late. For the errand boy had finished his serving terms with his boss, and was set to leave the next day.
I was filled with rage and anger, ready to tear him apart, the moment that errand boy denied the act in front of his boss, Mr Chukwu and his wife. He swore on all the gods of the earth, that he didn't do anything of such".
